Connected Breath

It’s the beginning of yoga class and we’ve been asked to bring our hands in prayer position to our heart as we sit in a comfortable position. Normally I would press my palms together, firm and even, but today my teacher says something different:

“Press your palms together firmly, now keep pressing through your thumbs and fingers, but create a little space in between your palms. In this way you make room for the seed of your intention.”

In the past, when I had set my intention at the beginning of class, it would feel superficial. This time, I found a great feeling of hope as I made space for my little seed – or pod – of intention. Sometimes we are tempted to speak of the illness to others for many reasons. One of the common reasons is seeking understanding from people around us.  However, if you have to speak of your illness, speak only one and that’s it. Practise ‘no repetition’ in explaining your illness to others.

The reason is; when you speak of your illness, you are giving your attention and focus to your illness. The energy and vibration that you put on your illness plus what others may have for you (like sympathy, sadness) only contributes more power towards your illness.

I completely agree with this article about enlightenment. It talks about our energy being a precious commodity, not to be wasted. I came to this understanding too, that it is possible to let other peoples’ shit roll off your back and let it be theirs as you stay in your own loving and positive frame of mind.

It is difficult to maintain this mindset, but once learned it never leaves you and things affect you less as you grow in spirit. What is around us in our daily life is a make believe play — you can choose to react as scripted or write your own response. Think of your energy as a precious commodity and direct it positively for your own and others good.

Chores. Love. Service.

Three years ago I discovered the secret to life. I was elated and on a high. Nothing could bother me. I felt free and as light as Dandelion seeds completely absent any resistance and taking flight easily whichever way the wind blew. Things that used to infuriate me just didn’t anymore. It simply wasn’t worth my energy to feel rotten and miserable. The secret I learned is that our energy is a precious commodity, even more precious than gems and diamonds.

The euphoria came because it wasn’t just a theory. It was knowledge infused into the very cells of my body. I was a superhero who went out into the world unable to spend my precious energy in any way that was wasteful.

completely focused on our five senses of seeing, hearing, tasting, touching
and smelling. Our five senses are constantly stimulated. They are enticed
and exploited all the time.

It is therefore no surprise that we tend to focus our minds on materialism
24 hours per day. We tend to focus all the time on big cars, big houses,
lots of money in the bank, and so on.

AquaCure Diary: Final Week, Very Happy

About a month ago I started my AquaCure experiment, where for one month I drank water out of a glass with positive words written on it and said affirmations out loud.  I came up with the idea to improve my health, after seeing Masuro Emoto’s  test of rice and photographs of water crystals and writing about it in How Water is Deeply Connected to Our Individual and Collective Consciousness.

In AquaCure: First Week, Subtle Change I talked about reading a self-help book titled “Why Don’t I do the Things I know are Good for Me?”   This book was refreshing and enlightening as it went to the heart of my issue “self-care.”  I learned that rational thoughts may tell us what would be good for us, but our fatigue and emotions – the need for immediate stress relief or comfort – override our rationality.  In order to develop good self-care, we need to learn new behaviors that cause us to act in our own long-term best interest rather than momentary satisfaction.
The second week AquaCure: Second Week, a Positive Shift I told a story about how a friend went on a non-gluten diet and that inspired me to do the same.  I went on the food plan as a lark, but within days I took it serious because I saw my body and energy shift as I lost the addictive urge to stuff my face with food, my energy became balanced instead of highs and lows, I could think clearer, aches and pains went away, and I lost weight.

And in the third week AquaCure:  Third Week, Loving Gluten-Free Diet I went on to estole the benefits of the non-gluten diet by providing research about gluten’s link to chronic diseases and facts like “Did you know that 1 in 7 people have an intolerance to gluten, a protein in wheat, spelt, rye, barley, oats.”

As an extra dimension to the experiment I even tried different types of water each week – Week 1 was tap water, Week 2 bottled water, Week 3 filtered water, and Week 4 ionized water.

To tell you the honest truth, I couldn’t tell a difference in drinking types of waters, so I think manifestation is more determined on the “quality of your thoughts” rather than “quality of the water.”  My own opinion is focusing on the water glass makes you stop and give more energy to your intention and that was the key — the universe gave me these guided gifts, I listened to my intuition, and then acted on them.  Below are the manifestations:

  1. Led to the self-help book
  2. A friend told me about their gluten-free food plan
  3. And the final manifestation that I haven’t told you about is … a puppy.

I have been wanting a dog the past few years and have looked but nothing stuck. That is until a few weeks ago when I stepped into a PetSmart store to look at the latest round of shelter dogs.  Although I wanted an older, trained dog, a little puppy Chiweenie (cross between Chihuahua and Dachshund) stole my heart.  When I held her, she melted into my arms.  And ever since, she and the above manifestations have brought more health, happiness, and joy into my life.

Here’s a wonderful article that I have reblogged from A Woman’s Guide, which talks about the mindfulness of Thich Nhat Hanh in stopping to be mindful when you hear a bell ring, and Fred Rogers from the popular children’s television show who took 10 seconds of time in his Emmy speech to thank those “who loved him into being.” It’s an inspiring reminder to take a moment from our hectic life to contemplate.

Grateful for Simple Pleasures – Instruction #2

Do you remember those special moments in your life when you discover something small and simple but yet profound because it makes your life easier?

I was thinking about this and my list of special discoveries begins with an ergonomic peeler .  Yes, a potato, carrot, zucchini type peeler.  As I grew up, I remember using one of those skinny, metal peelers and often having indentations in my fingers after peelings a bunch of potatoes.  Then one day, I was gifted with an OXO good grip peeler and my life changed.  Now I can peel away without pain and frustration.

Another item that made a difference in my life was discovering down blankets.  I grew up in San Francisco, which is known for it’s cold, windy, foggy days.  Often at night as a child I was cold.  I’d pile on the blankets, and then go to my closet and pile on coats and robes to bring a little warmth.

When I was a young adult, I flew to Germany to meet and travel with a boyfriend who was in the military. While in Deutschland, and staying in quaint little hotels that dotted the Bavarian alps, I discovered down blankets on their beds. Ever since that trip, I’ve purchased fluffy down blankets for my beds and have never been cold at night again.

When you talk about possessions, the first thing that comes to mind is having that big house or fancy car … but great pleasure can be derived from simple items like a peeler or down blanket.

It all depends on your perspective.  It’s just a matter of first opening yourself to try something new instead of continuing to be frustrated or marred by finger indentations or freezing cold, then realizing how its enhanced your life, and finally be grateful.

LIFE INSTRUCTION No. 2:  Be grateful for the simple pleasures and discoveries in your life — whether it’s the smile of a baby or a potato peeler.  It’s when we accumulate a lot of small little positive moments like this that we feel happiness growing in our spirit.

7 Traits for Building a Habit of Success


My all time favorite quote is what I posted yesterday as Building a Habit of Success.  It basically warns that if we go through life making resolutions or promises that we don’t keep, we are building a “habit of failure.”

I don’t know about you, but I’d rather build a “habit of success” because every time I say to myself that I’m going to lose weight and cheat a week later or plan to clean the garage but instead sit in front the TV, I feel bad inside.   How about you?

Here are 7 important tips for moving in the direction of success:

  1. Make resolutions – In the article The Resolution Solution: Creating and Keeping your New Year’s Resolutions, the author says the act of making resolutions — that run the gamut from losing weight, starting exercise, stopping smoking and reducing alcohol use — can be valuable opportunities to increase the quality of your life. Scientific research indicates that you are “10 times more likely to change by making a New Year’s resolution compared to non-resolvers with the identical goals and comparable motivation to change.” 
  2. Keep your promises – Draw a line in the sand and say from this point on, I’m going to leave my past failures behind me and start keeping my promises.  To build your record of success, don’t make a promise unless you feel you will keep it. And if you do commit to a decision, keep it no matter what gets in the way.
  3. Clean your house – Researches at Princeton University did a study that concluded “When your environment is cluttered, the chaos restricts your ability to focus.  The clutter also limits your brain’s ability to process information,” as stated in Scientists Find Physical Clutter Negatively Affects Your Ability to Focus, Process Information. In the study, researchers measured the brain’s response to organized and disorganized stimuli and found if you clear up the clutter ”you will be less irritable, more productive, distracted less often, and able to process information better.”
  4. Clear up mental clutter – It’s not only our physical environment that we must clean spick-and-span but we need to make space in our minds.  In A Cluttered Mind from A Simpler Life blog, the author suggests writing everything down so you don’t have to keep track of it in your mind; journal to alleviate thinking about things over-and-over; plan your goals then contemplate one object, word, or thought at a time; dip into your heart by intuitively feeling what you should do next; and release unhelpful thoughts.
  5. Be persistent, consistent and have tenacity – If you’ve ever studied successful people, their roads have not been smooth but littered with ruts, potholes, and barriers. The one thing that sets them apart from the average person is “tenacity,” a stick-to-it-ness that empowers them to surmount obstacles and stay the course. Take Donald Trump for example, he’s filed bankruptcy 4 times, gained and lost businesses and billions of dollars, and he’s been through 4 marriages … yet, the Donald keeps reinventing himself. If an obstacle arises for you, move on, over, or around it and reinvent yourself better!
  6. Stay in the present moment – One of the main stumbling blocks to success is our resistance to change because we are stuck in the past — “He did this to me, so now I don’t want a new relationship.  I was laid off, now no one wants to hire me.”  The past has no power over us unless we let its negativity pervade our thoughts.  Eckhart Tolle advises that we “Always say ‘yes’ to the present moment. What could be more futile, more insane, than to create inner resistance to what already is?  Say ‘yes’ to life — and see how life suddenly starts working for you rather than against you.”
  7. Have an attitude that “nothing is impossible” – Miracles occur everyday — people are cured of cancer, a patient comes out of a coma after years of silence, and a gigantic U.S. Airways airplane lands on the Hudson River intact with all 155 passengers and crew safe.  See the possibilities in life and believe that nothing is impossible!  Your reality is not set in stone, but is formed moment-to-moment by your thoughts, decisions, and beliefs.  Become the architect of your reality and design it successful!

Building a Habit of Success

Modern psychology tells us that when we start something and do not complete it, or make a resolution and do not keep it, we are forming a “habit of failure.”

If you do not intend to do a thing, do not start; if you do start, see it through even if the heavens fall.  If you make up your mind to do something, do it; let nothing, no one interfere — never allow it to be overruled.
